Turning a Story into a Quilt - Lily, The Queen of Bugs

The Queen of Bugs
Not every quilt begins with a pattern.
Sometimes it begins with a story.
The inspiration for this quilt came from a little girl named Lily.
As a young child, Lily was afraid of bugs.
Ladybugs, beetles, butterflies, bees—it didn't matter. If it crawled, buzzed, or fluttered, she wanted nothing to do with it.
But Lily's grandmother saw something different.
Instead of telling Lily there was nothing to fear, she helped her look closer.
Together they spent time in the garden noticing the colors hidden in butterfly wings, the shimmer of beetles in the sunlight, and the important jobs insects perform every day.
Slowly, fear turned into curiosity.
Curiosity turned into appreciation.
And before long, the little girl who once ran from bugs became fascinated by them.
The neighborhood children began bringing her interesting insects to see. She drew them in sketchbooks and shared what she learned.
By the end of summer, someone made her a paper crown decorated with butterflies and beetles.
From then on, everyone called her:
The Queen of Bugs.
What we love most about this story isn't really the bugs.
It's the reminder that sometimes the things we fear—or simply don't understand—become much more beautiful when we take the time to look a little closer.
That's true in gardens.
It's true in quilting.
And it's true in life.
Turning a Story Into a Quilt
When we discovered this bug panel collection, it immediately reminded us of Lily's story.
The detailed insects aren't scary at all.
They're beautiful.
Rich colors, intricate wings, delicate flowers, and tiny details that invite you to stop and look a little longer.
For this sample, we paired the bug panel blocks with simple layer-cake-sized squares in bright pinks.
The construction couldn't be easier.
Large blocks.
Simple piecing.
Quick progress.
Yet the finished quilt feels vibrant, cheerful, and full of personality.
It's proof that a beautiful panel doesn't need complicated piecing to create something meaningful.
Sometimes the fabric already tells the story.
